In 1853, Engelbert Hausemann, a commercial traveller, moved from Germany to Amsterdam and opened a department store selling a wide variety of items. Wilhelm Hotte arrived to help Hausmann grow his business and after working and travelling together for 10 years they joined forces under the name Hausmann and Hotte. They had to import everything into the Netherlands as there were no real puzzles or games at the time.
By the start of the 1920's their range was expanding and a bigger variety of games and toys became available. These toys had to be of good quality and strong enough for a wooden elephant to stand on them. They were sold under the name Jumbo, the elephant as a symbol of strength and so this was the beginning of the Jumbo brand. In 1958 Jumbo started to produce and sell puzzles.
